To the east of the villa lies Europe’s best preserved ancient cave dwellings and their associated paintings, many of which have only recently been discovered. Over the last 100,000 years the Dordogne and its tributaries have carved some spectacular river cliffs and rock formations. Over the last 50,000 years humans have exploited these in order to provide shelter and protection. As a result a number of complete villages have been built into these cliffs. The cliffs have also provided exceptional vantage points and over the centuries, communities and chateaux have been built (such as Dome and the Chateau de Belcome).

Château de Belcavre which is built on a rocky peak in the shape of a bow.

Site of La Madeleine - Troglodyte village, castle ruins and chapel built overlooking the Vézère.

The Vézère River valley is listed by UNESCO as part of the "World Heritage". This well deserved distinction is due to the exceptional shape and structure of the cliffs surrounding the valley. There are few regions where the mineral world blends as well with the rolling landscape. These gracefully curving cliffs, allied with a temperate climate and a perfect harmony of colours in the vegetation, contribute to the area's reputation of being a perfect jewel where the fine art of living is cultivated to perfection.

A small selection of the caves, castles and rock formations that can be visited are detailed below.

Grand Roc Caves

The cliff of the Grand Roc / Laugerie Basse lies in Périgord Noir, in Les Eyzies, world capital of prehistory. It is 1½ hours east of the property.

Eccentrics, are very rare concretions underground. As they appear here in great quantity, they can even form exceptionally pure bunches.

You will be surprised by the geometric forms of triangles and polygonal concretions that can be seen when entering the cave but also further in.

The Mammoth's Foot, on which small eccentrics have developed, used to be a stalagmitic column; it is now suspended more than one metre above the ground. In the background you can see calcite that has been coloured by the natural pigments of infiltrating waters.

Rock pools give the cave of the Grand Roc its lunar aspect.

Lastournelle Caves

Hidden away within the lush landscapes of the Lot-et-Garonne at Sainte-Colombe de Villeneuve-sur-Lot, about 1-½ hours from the property, you will find one of the true pearls of the Aquitaine, the LASTOURNELLE CAVES. These limestone caves have been developing for more than 25 million years, building up a host of stalactites, stalagmites and limestone tapestries of an incomparable richness.

The Caves are divided into 7 caverns (salles):

  • Salle du Puits (Well)
  • Salle Ratopénado
  • Salle Ronde (round)
  • Salle des Colonnes (colums)
  • Salle Marboutin
  • Salle de la Statue
  • Salle de la Source (Spring)

The Roque Saint-Christophe

In one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Périgord, halfway between les Eyzies and Montignac, 1-½ hours east of the property, the enormous cliff of the "Roque Saint-Christophe" rises to a peak above the Vézère River.

This limestone wall, one kilometer long and eighty meters high, has been endlessly eroded by the river and frost until it became carved of rock shelters and long and aerial terraces impressionably overhead.

These natural cavities were occupied by cave dwellers approximately 55 000 years ago. Later, during the Middle Ages and up until the Renaissance Period, they gradually changed to become a fortress and protected town.

A pathway through the cliff allows for easy and safe visiting of the site at any age. From one level to the next you can discover the troglodytic fort and the town. This voyage in time will allow you to discover the everyday lives of our ancestors, their industry, their art and their worship.

Duration of the visit: approximately 45 min to 1 hour

The visit can be done with or without a guide and this, without additional charge, depending on the number of requests. A guidebook in English is also available.
