Perhaps you may think that canoeing isn’t for you, but just read on to discover that in fact it is one of the most popular activities within the Dordogne region. There is no better way to experience the beauty and tranquillity of the Dordogne Valley and its tributaries than by hiring a canoe and paddling various distances, depending on how the mood takes you.

On a hot summers day there is nothing better than cooling off close to the river or indeed in it!

You will see some of the region’s most picturesque villages that in some of which have literally been carved out of the river cliffs. Examples of the many trips available are detailed below:

Canoes Valley Vezere

(Approximately 80km north east of the villa)

If you want to experience an unforgettable river trip…
Why not take a day or a weekend and go with your children, parents or friends and discover the heart of nature.

Open from April to October

They provide you with solid equipment that conforms to the latest standards and certified by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. You can paddle, provided you can swim, in one of their unsinkable canoes or kayaks and even take children under 12 with you, provided their parents are present. You will have the choice of canoes seating 2, 3 or 4 people or kayaks seating 1 or 2.

For your safety, they provide a large range of life jackets and will advise you to wear casual clothing (shorts, swimming costume) and shoes. For your comfort, they will provide you with a waterproof container for keeping your possessions dry and carrying your picnic.

As you set out on the grand descent, you will pass beautiful castles, such as the Château de Losse with its terraces, which overlook the river, and the Château de Belcavre, which is built on a rocky peak in the shape of a bow.

You will then arrive at St Léon sur Vézère, a haven of peace with its church and castle built on the bank of the river. You can picnic there, have some refreshments or visit the old village. After this stop, you will enter the "royal route " of prehistory traced by the Vézère right to Les Eyzies.

The river will enable you to touch the majestic 80-m high cliffs of
La Roque St Christophe, with one of the largest natural terraces in Europe, which is 500 m long, and was inhabited for 55 000 years from the prehistoric era to the Middle Ages. You will then paddle alongside the site of La Madeleine; its troglodyte village, castle ruins and chapel built overlooking the Vézère.

Just before you arrive in Les Eyzies, you will discover the high cliffs of Laugerie Basse. An exceptional site with a prehistoric shelter and the Grand Roc caves, a marvel of nature, made of innumerable concretions and crystallizations of exceptional purity.
